There are certain places that grow to mean a lot to you, spaces that resonate with both your past and your future. For New Works, that place has become Bernstorff’s Palæ. Our move to this storied building, now the premises of New Works Residence, is a reflection of our journey and aspirations.
Bernstorff’s Palæ, a jewel in Copenhagen’s Frederiksstaden, stands as a tribute to 18th-century architecture, meticulously preserved over time. Designed by architect JG Rosenberg and commissioned by Johann Hartwig Ernst von Bernstorff, the building’s first cornerstone was laid in 1752.
Our new home on the second floor offers us a unique canvas; once the quarters of the servants, the floor and its heritage leave us with fewer restrictions than the floors below, granting us creative freedom while respecting the history of the space.
Bernstorffs Palæ was the very first place we saw on our lookout for a new abode, and it lingered in our minds. Co-founder and Creative Director Knut Bendik Humlevik shares, ‘New Works Residence has always been the dream for Nikolaj and me. In some ways, I’ve been living here for several years already. It’s special that it’s finally happening, that we’re now experiencing it with the people around
us.’

Though our new Residence sprawls more than three times the size of our old showroom, it retains an intimacy and a sense of the personal and familiar— echoing our ethos and spirit, only within a larger framework. Knut: ‘Naming it our Residence rather than our showroom came naturally, as it mirrors how we live and work together. The space is, in many ways, our home—a sanctuary where we are meant to live and thrive, a space that brings ease. This view of good interiors and beauty as more than surface qualities, but as cherished, valuable elements that bring quality to life, is something Lotta and I share, and perhaps, it explains why our collaboration works so well.’
The New Works Residence is our largest venture to date and, quite literally, one that we hold close to home and heart. Every room has a purpose and meaning beyond mere design display; it’s about how we inhabit and socialise within it.
The collaboration between our creative director, Knut Bendik Humlevik, and Swedish stylist Lotta Agaton spans five years, and so Agaton’s involvement in the project of creating our new home was a given. Their synergy has infused each room with its unique character, inspired by the architecture, the way the New Works team and our guests live and interact within it, and the sun’s journey through the space throughout the day—echoing our daily rhythms.
The play of light within its walls was one of the first things that struck us upon entering our new premises. With windows welcoming the sun from both the east and west, the sunlight choreographs a daily spectacle, changing the ambience of each room and subtly directing our path and presence within the space.
