An interview with Lotta Agaton

With the turn of a new year and the prospect of brighter days ahead, one can feel an urge to revive one’s surroundings, giving fresh impetus to everyday life. To help look at things anew, we have asked our long-term collaborator, stylist Lotta Agaton to share her thoughts on interior design.

Is your approach different when working with commercial spaces as opposed to residential?

No, I pretty much approach all projects the same way, the creative process is often the same and the initial mood board is often a good way to start collecting ideas.

What, in your opinion, makes up an interesting and pleasant interior?

It has to consist of different textures and structures, not be to perfect and not reveal everything at first sight. You should always be able to discover new layers when looking closely whether it is an interior or image.

Lotta Agaton is known in the industry for her keen eye for detail and perfectly balanced interiors. From her acclaimed Stockholm-based interior design studio, she works with styling and interior design projects for an international client base.

Where do you look for inspiration?

I can find inspiration everywhere but very often in architecture, fashion and art. It can be a small detail like a structure, material or colour combination that sets the tone for an entire interior.

How is your creative process?

I always start with a mood board that sets the tone for the project and after that we set a colour and material palette and from there we take it step by step down to the smallest items like cutlery and cushions.

Are there any faux pas in interior design? Which mistakes do people often make?

Never ever use copies and quick fixes, let it take time and save up until you can buy what you really want.

What could be a quick fix for updating an interior?

Ha ha, there are no quick fixes but I like to colour coordinate and group items for still lifes not to make the space look too cluttered. Storage is also the key to a calm interior so that you can store away everything that you don’t want to see.

What is the key to creating an interior design that lasts?

Use good materials that age beautifully and a neutral colour palette that you don’t get tired of.

Will the pandemic change the way we furnish and decorate our homes and commercial spaces?

Yes, I think the home office is here to stay and will play a more significant role in our homes.

What do you believe will be the key interior trends of 2021?

I think we will all pay more attention to our homes since we tend to spend more time at home, and again the home office is crucial and maybe also to have a few small workspaces in different rooms if more family members will have to work from home at the same time.

Stay safe, keep distance and give your home some extra love so that it becomes your favourite place to be.
